April 10: The Day the "Unsinkable" Titanic Set Sail

 On April 10, 1912, a legend was born, though it was destined for a tragic end. The RMS Titanic, the largest and most luxurious ship of its time, set sail from Southampton, England, on its maiden voyage toward New York City. Known as the "unsinkable" ship, it carried over 2,200 people, including some of the wealthiest individuals in the world and hundreds of hopeful immigrants.

​Little did they know that in just five days, this magnificent vessel would collide with an iceberg and rest forever at the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean.

1. ​A Cancelled Lifeboat Drill: Believe it or not, a lifeboat drill was scheduled to take place on the same day the Titanic hit the iceberg. However, the captain cancelled it. Had that drill happened, the crew and passengers might have been better prepared to save more lives.
2. ​The Missing Binoculars: The lookout crew on the Titanic didn't have binoculars! They were locked in a cabinet, and the officer who had the key had been transferred off the ship at the last minute. The lookouts had to rely only on their eyes to spot danger in the dark.
3. ​The "Ghost" Ship Nearby: During the sinking, another ship called the SS Californian was only about 20 miles away. They saw the Titanic's distress flares but didn't respond because their wireless operator had gone to sleep.
